Tuning Forks

Named by Pete, I designed and made this quilt to sell on etsy. I wanted a lap quilt that would appeal to the guys.  It's graphic. It's controlled in colors. The quilting is geometric.

Very controlled for me! Just 2 fabrics and a third one for the binding. I had seen a quilt someplace and intended to copy it but somehow I didn't and thus the Tuning Forks appeared!

Pick Up Stix 2

I made this a second time for a silent auction for Camp Stevens, the Episcopal Church's camp in Julian.

Simply made, it is striking in these autumn solids and blacks.

Of course it also became a canvas for my newly evolving freemotion quilting skills. Clamshells in the body with Grey thread, ribbon candy in the inner black border and feathers in the borders.

Bright Stars for Heather

Young Heather came to us last summer as a new grad from seminary to intern with Brenda at St. Andrews. At the same time Pete had graduated and was also interning as a Deacon.

We enjoyed our young new age Deacon interning (barefoot) to remain connected to the earth with Seasoned Pete also finding his voice and role in the church.

Heather was ordained and has accepted a post to minister to students at UCSD. We bid her good bye and good luck with a bright modern quilt of stars, peace and inclusion. We will have it autographed and prayed over on her last Sunday at St Andrews.

Stunning in Blue and Gold

This 47 by 57" lap quilt started with a collection of 6 matching fabrics in blue with with gold accents. I picked up all 6 as a collection at a garage sale in my neighborhood a few weeks ago for $1. I then added pieces from my collection in either shades of blue or shades of yellow. Some blocks twirl right, some twirl left, so I bordered each block on 2 sides to let them stand out from one another. I searched for my border until I located a gorgeous blues with yellow stripe!

Abstract Nine Patch

This was so fun to make! It's freestyle cut and put back together then trimmed to size.  I quilted it with the walking foot every 2 to 3 inches.

Jungle Baby Quilt

Porscha asked me to make a baby quilt for a friend of hers. She described the quilt she wanted as a jungle theme with a modern twist. For colors she mentioned touches of deeper earth tones with pops of color. The new baby a boy. I decided on some animal fabrics from my stash with green to represent the jungle plants and blue to represent the water. This was the beginning of the original fabric pull.

The pattern is called crosscut quilt. I started by cutting 6 1/2 inch blocks from the jungle fabrics then slicing them diagonally and inserting a 1 inch strip in each direction. They were then sewed back together and then cut into 5 1/2 inch blocks. They get sewn back together. So I really had no idea how it would look until it was finished.

I found a half yard of a  darling ROAR! print in my baby stash that works well for the back
I am pleased with it!

Pride Quilt 2021

I was finishing a quilt recently that I had started a few years ago and decided to finish for my friend Laketa. But it wasn't talking to me. I was a little bothered, because I liked the quilt and all but it just wasn't LAKETA. While quilting it, I received a text from another old friend Mauricio, randomly sending me a photo of a quilt he had seen at a PRIDE event... BOOM! This quilt told me it was Mauricio's quilt....

Isn't it amazing how a project will SPEAK and tell you where it belongs!

Juneteenth 2021

In 2021 the US recognized Juneteenth as a holiday. It marks the announcement of emancipation June 19th 1865. The colors are red, green and black (blood, prosperity and soil) of Africa and her people. I made this Juneteenth quilt to gift Laketa in the purchase of her first home.
The back of this quilt is a rich gold and black.

Peace Out: A Quilt for Myself

I was inspired by a quilt tutorial online and a collection of unique peace-signs and sixties psychedelic fabrics to make a cuddle quilt just for me!  Set on a black background, with a polyester batting, and the back another in theme fabric, it's so ME and I love it.

Pop Star Quilt to Jacket!

I made a small quilt using a Jenny Doan tutorial using the binding tool..... used up some bright scraps and made a 1 star quilt. It was cute but I offered it for sale, it was purchased by a woman who upcycles quilts into jackets.

A few months later Sandy surprised me by gifting me the unique quilt made into coat!  This quilt had some sentimental fabrics in it.... a Y2K fabric (Miranda's birth year) some emojis that were worn by Ezekiel on his masks and his "boring bags", a bag of toys to carry places.  Also some peace signs from a quilt I made for myself. So, now I get to WEAR my sentimental fabrics!

Bright Abstract Lap Quilt

I was inspired by a quilt I saw on Pinterest. I followed the pattern very close to what I saw with fabrics I bought in Anaheim, a collection of bright mottled fabrics paired with crisp white.

Play With Stripes Baby Quilt

The idea came from a quilt tutorial over at Missouri Star quilts, this idea of cutting and quartering a stripe and reassembling it to make a design. I used 2 related blue stripes to make this dramatic baby sized quilt. Just quilted this year, I put it together several years ago.

A Quilt for Brad

I started this greens quilt with no particular end idea or owner, just wanted to make random sytips to change into HST's with green. The Laketa casually mentioned that her rather tall husband wondered if HE was ever going to get a quilt...... and this quilt now flashed forward with purpose. A tall lap quilt!

The colors look a little washed out in the bright sunshine. Here is Brad modeling his quilt!
