Vintage Squares by Ruth & Anne

While visiting my Dad and his wife Ruth, I found a block in the pile Ruth had going "to the craft club." It was the one with yellow and orange. She told me it was an unfinished doll-house quilt.  She didn't remember when she made it, but maybe in the 60's?  When I said I'd take it home and make it into a table runner, she rustled around and found a few more unfinished blocks.  They were in various stages of finished, colors that had nothing to do with each other, related only by the fact that she made them many years earlier.
So here they are!
I added a few strips from the scrap bin, looking for circa 60's things. I love what it is now!  Do you?

Texas Hills

This was an early quilt I made for my mother.  I had a software program that printed templates for blocks.  I would print them, pin them to fabric and cut them out.  (Like sewing patterns) without ever seeing how blocks might look!

My parents had retired to the "Hill Country" of Texas, so that is what I was representing in this lap quilt.  Texas is appliqued, the texas flag and state flower (bluebonnets) are on there as well.  I placed dates important to our family on the ground blocks, weddings and births.

Next time I visit I will try and get a better picture.  This is was taken with a 2006 Cell Phone!

Prayer Quilt for my Dad

Many years ago, my Dad faced kidney cancer, and it's been nearly 10 years.  Hehas had a recurrence, but is again in a solid remission, enjoying a great, active life in his late 80's.  Whooping It Up, even!
When first diagnosed, I made this quilt from scraps that included scraps my Mom had given me when they retired and left California.  I took it to church where it was blessed.  Members of the congregation tied knots in the quilt with each knot signifying a prayer someone offered for my Dad.  Later on, my Mom hand quilted the quilt to strengthen the fibers and fabric of this quilt.
I took it to him in Texas, while he was in ICU after surgery.  He used it during his stay and after as he healed and recovered at home.  He still keeps it at the foot of his bed.

Dad & Ruth's Wedding

For my father's wedding I made a pair of generous lap quilts, using the easy to make flying geese set in traditional rows.  I made HIS quilt in dark, masculine colors, and hers in lighter feminine colors.  I substituted a few of HIS blocks into HER quilt, and vice versa.  We took the quilts to the reception and parties before the wedding, and they were fully signed by the many friends and family that joined in that day.

Blue Table Runner

While visiting Dad and Ruth, Ruth asked for a blue table runner.

A Spring Table Runner for Ruth

A great find some years back of this basket fabric, and the floral scraps Ruth won at a raffle and gave me when she first met my Dad, make an appearance in a spring table runner to commemorate their second wedding anniversary.  Spring, 2013
