Abstract Nine Patch

This was so fun to make! It's freestyle cut and put back together then trimmed to size.  I quilted it with the walking foot every 2 to 3 inches.

Fun And Bright

Please pay no attention to dates for a time.  My blog was ignored for 18 months.  I didn;t stop QUILTING, but there was a super slow pandemic, some health challenges, a pandemic (oh yeah) and so the blog and actually photographs got ignored.  For a long time.  So for awhile, quilts will be added in no particular order.  I'll try and remember what they were for and details.

Fun And Bright was an experiment in stack cutting of solids, and ended up around 36 X 45".  20 blocks large, each block ended up around 9". The quilting is freehand lines around every 3 inches.

Memory Signature Quilt

I got a LAST minute notice that our Nurse Manager of many years would be retiring at the end of the month, Oh, and could I finish the quilt in a few days to go to a party and be signed?

Whew!

So, into the cupboard of UFO's I went.  (UFO= Unfinished Objects) I found this great nine patch quilt top I made last summer with lots of white space.  In fact, so much white space that when I completed the quilt top, I thought it was too simple and plain!  It's made from a charm pack, some pale icey blue/green and a nice amount of pure white muslin

Zoom zip, backed, quilted, bound, and it's ready to be enhanced with signatures, drawings, good wishes and memories!

QUILT: Rings

This quilt was inspired by a wedding.  I wanted a representation of gold wedding bands, and had several great greys in a collection with the yellows.  After finishing the yellow rings, I decided to make grey nine-patches with gold centers.  the background is a great white with grey x's (kisses?) and the quilt came together as a generous lap quilt. White and natural in the quilt layer makes it a year round good choice for San Diego.

Autumn Snuggle Quilt

Isn't it always like this?  The quilter's own snuggle quilt is in tatters, worn and the batting thin and patchy!  It's still good, but so thin it's good for summer naps, not for the first chill of Autumn in SoCal.  So, into my stash for a set of fat quarters I bought online at some clearance some years ago and a pair of neutrals from my Anaheim Fabric Warehouse treasures!  Some Autum charms, left over from a project last year complete the random circles. Machine quilted and raw-edge applique.  I used a regular old glue stick to place the circles. The batting is 100% cotton, a little stronger for an autumn quilt.  Just my size"  46 X 56.

The design is my own.  Favorite basic 4,9 or 16 patches.  I call it "Square Unless it's a Circle"

Sand Unity Ceremony

When a friend of mine was getting married, she described to me a "Sand Unity Ceremony" that would take place at her wedding.  Two different colors of sand in two jars are poured into one new vessel.  This symbolizes the two becoming one, intertwined, inseparable, eternal.  I loved the image, and decided to illustrate that in a wedding quilt for the couple.  Her wedding colors were grey and pink, and his favorite colors were turquoise and purple.

Found the fabrics in Anaheim, at my favorite warehouse (!) and a few bits and pieces of other things from the scrap box.  I love the two grays i found for the background.  I like how this combo of 9-patches and 4-patches came together.  They are 4 1/2 inch blocks (but I accidently made the 9 patches 5" blocks (!) so had to arbitrarily trim them down.  That makes the grains uneven, more authentic!

I googled "sand unity ceremony" and liked this quote:  "Just as the grains of sand can never be separated, may the two of you be intertwined together in love for the rest of your lives."

Little Doll House Quilt

Made this little nine-patch quilt from the scraps of another quilt.  It was an early lesson in setting blocks on point.  They are 3" blocks.  It is on the wall behind my wooden Barbie Vanity made for me by my Grandfather back in the very early 60's.

1920's Baby Nine Patch

Everyone has seen the pastel fabric reproduction fabrics.  They have small motifs on them and are so well suited for a baby quilt.  I chose a good steady nine patch, and made the block with 2 1/2" pieces for a 6" block.  The coloration was random so I could use a zillion fabrics.  Set on point, alternated with plain white blocks.  I decided to hand quilt this one and put a little design in the plain blocks.

This quilt will be for a grandchild of mine............

Red & Green But Not Christmas

Red and green go nicely together, and many vintage quilts are that color combination.  So I wanted to make something in those colors but NOT Christmas. Plus, the stripes fascinated me when I first saw them.
I chose the good-old 9-patch; an easy, versatile quilt block, in many different patterns of red and green, set square in a square in those great stripes, then offset by half a block in each column.  Another delight was the border stripe, I love buying interesting stripes for borders!

Blue And Yellow Sprout

This utility quilt is one of my very favorites!  Made from leftover scraps my friend Sprout gave me, along with scraps from my own collection.  The fabrics are not really related, though there are some plaids in common, and of course the colors are so great together.... blue and yellow.  The batting is warm and natural and it's just the right size to drape over the end of the bed and use as an extra winter blanket; or for my winter naps.  (I work nights so I nap a lot during the day!)
I like the un-related colors and patterns; the random placements, and most of all that they were  hand-me-downs from my good friend Sprout.

A Pair Of Wedding Quilts, Veronica/Jesus

In this pair of wedding quilts, the same quilt is made in different colors, red for love, blue for sky.  The man's quilt is a little larger, due to the block being about an inch larger.  A tiny bit of blue is on the red quilt, and some red (on the back of) the blue quilt, to make sure each quilt is only a part of the whole, the marriage.

Baby Animals

I wanted o experiment with Inktense Pencils on this baby quilt.  I used an Aunt martha iron-on embroidery pattern which I traced with permanent Sharpie markers.  Then I colored them in with inktense pencils.  These colored pencils when wet with the paintbrush convert to a water-fast ink.  Heat set by ironing, I then set them simply into a scraps from he sewing room floor quilt and stpiile-quilted then washed to shrink.  The colors remained.  I distressed it lightly with some coffe stains, to make it appear to be from the 60's.
