Retirement Quilt for Suzanne

 

My earliest NICU team consisted of Sprout, Suzanne and myself. We made a well balanced team, leaning g on each other for support and skills. 

Suzanne has always loved Halloween, and throws the greatest biggest parties every year. Of course I needed her retirement quilt to be a Halloween theme!

I will deliver it to the hospital tomorrow and all her friends will write their inscriptions.

Spooky Spider Web Quilt

 I posted on my Facebook asking for suggestions on what to make next. The idea that had the most votes was a Halloween quilt. I've made a few but you know what?  It's October and it sounded like fun!

I have a nice Halloween collection and it was fun rooting around in it looking for 2 and  2 1/2 inch strips. 

Then some solid black off the bolt and a great triangle ruler and off I went! 

I free motion quilted the website in black thread. It's 40 inches square and there was only a TINY leftover scrap! A few of the web slices are pieced leftovers.

AYOQ: ALL HALLOWS EVE QUILT FOR BABY

This is the final of the twelve first months quilts made for my Grandson. Don't know why I saved this for the last. I had the idea and plan in my mind for some time.  I guess I was collecting strips and waiting for some chunks of time.  The back of this great quilt is some red and orange flames on black, and was a gift to me from Shannon, my Co-Grandma. So this, the final quilt, is a joint effort!

This is a fun quilt to make!

I guess the only thing left to make now is his first birthday quilt!  hahahahahsa

Coffin Quilt

Back in 2004, I read an article in a book on old quilts about the custom of memorial, or "Coffin Quilts" in the late 1800's.  So I decided, along with a collection of reproduction prints of "mourning cloths" of that era, to make my own Coffin Quilt.  I chose a block named (of course) Coffin Star, which is a 16 patch square in a square.  I used 2 different grays from my stash to set the somber black fabrics, along with a tan from someplace.

The border is a great Anaheim Warehouse find, a black/pink/grey stripe I picked up for $1.98 a yard on one of my fabric binges.

 Perhaps my favorite part of the Coffin Quilt is the Epitaph, written by my BFF and quilting partner Sprout.  I wrote it on the back, and have asked Pete to display and read it at my funeral (some day MANY hundreds of quilts from now!)

In death
I leave this world I've known,
To reach
A place with streets of gold.

But still,
Remain, thorough quilts I've sewn,
And left,
Upon God's earth to hold.

 

An Old Halloween Quilt

I was bringing out the Halloween quilts and noticed I had not photographed some made many years ago.  Checked the back of this one; it's from 2002.

I recall getting the fabrics as a fat quarter collection, probably some fabric of the month club.  (I still indulge...... yeah, I have a lot of quilts "to be made!"

Simple shoo fly block, used scraps in the thin border.  The binding is plain black.

Halloween Quilt for a Little Girl!

)There are tricks to making this complicated looking block from 2 1/2 inch strips.  So I gathered new and old Halloween fabrics together and started sewing, twisting, cutting.  I love the way it looks!

I love Halloween fabrics!  And charms........ and table runners satisfy my craving to make a quilt "RIGHT NOW!" and finish it the same day I start.  So I cut some scraps into 5" squares, picked a favorite, easy charm patterns, and put myself together a table top decoration for October!

It uses the same pattern as "Charms Baby Quilt" from March 18, 2013. A fast, easy way to split a charm into a 4-patch with sashing!
