Nursing Career Memory Quilt

 

Each and every quilt block is made from a scrub top and pant that I wore during my 29 year nursing career. There are a lot of tags, a patch with a TCMC logo from a jacket I earned working on a project. And yes, every nurse at SOME point came home from work in a hospital-issue scrub. 

Most of my years were spent in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, so these scrubs went to births, they were at resuscitations, they were worn on busy nights and on quiet nights, spent just holding babies. 

They got sweat upon during intense procedures. They got peed on, spit up on, cried on. By babies as well as by me!  If you are a nurse, you know it's true. A careers worth of memories made into a quilt. 

In August 2021, we gathered along with 3 other nurses I started my career with: Janice, Vicia and Debbie, for a celebration by our fellow nurses. The quilt was signed and filled with good wishes and more memories. 

Peace Out: A Quilt for Myself

 I was inspired by a quilt tutorial online and a collection of unique peace-signs and sixties psychedelic fabrics to make a cuddle quilt just for me!  Set on a black background, with a polyester batting, and the back another in theme fabric, it's so ME and I love it.

Texas Geese in Flight Quilt

Da is 92, and I fly out every three months to visit.  So, I went out Father's Day, and rented a car, and we had fun!  We drove out to the country, and went and visited the former house he owned. We went to church on Sunday, and he saw a lot of old friends.  We ate BBQ and we went to a QUILT SHOP!  Ha ha, my suggestion of course!

I bought a yard of fabric on sale, a red with little white birds and tiny dark blue anchors on it, and that became the inspiration for this quilt which is a reminder of Dad. 

Flying Geese.  Because I love to make them. The block arrangement is called Dutchman's Puzzle.

It's 48 X 60, stitched in the ditch, a pretty simple quilt in red, white, black and grey... and a little navy.  And ummm, a patch or so of yellow.  Just because.

Studio Star / Sister's Choice Quilt

This is a quilt I was inspired to make after watching a tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company called Studio Star, but I believe the block is based off an older block called Sister's Choice.

It is made from a set of Fabric Of The Month FQ's I purchased many years ago, themed American Reproductions from the 1820's, and unbleached muslin.  Would have been a perfect quilt to hand quilt.......  instead I did a machine quilting on a 2 inch grid.

The batting is a thin, soft, 100% cotton bat that is light weight and very cuddly, softening in the wash to really wrap and wrinkle nicely.

Restorative Geese

Having made the scrap blocks a few at a time over time, it was nice to find myself several hours to finish this homey quilt.  The scraps remind me of quilts past, the loved ones I made them for, and the occasion. Since I had a full mind of worries when I started, by the time I finished I was in my happy place. What a way to be restored!
